Plot Summary: Luke Evans ("Fast & Furious 6," "Immortals") stars in the origin story of the man who became Dracula.
Dracula is one of the most frequently adapted literary characters of all-time. So it’s hard to believe there’s anything left to be told.
The title’s a sleight of hand, of course, with Gary Shore’s directorial debut introducing a new take on the familiar vampire. This is Dracula reborn as dark superhero, and while some of the Gothic trappings still remain, the horror has been largely replaced in favour of action and adventure
Initially, it appears to be a more historically-grounded take on the count; Luke Evan’s is Vlad the Impaler, the Slavic prince notorious for his acts of brutality on the battlefield. Yet he’s not presented as a monster – his grisly act of impaling the dead was a necessary evil, a way of inspiring fear in his enemies and ensuring the safety of his people. Vlad is an honourable man, adored by his citizens and loved by his wife and son. This is Dracula at his most human and humane.
But when the demands of the Turks become unreasonable, and all-out warfare seems unavoidable, Dracula is forced into making a terrible pact with a vampire. The deal is simple: Dracula will receive the creature’s extraordinary powers to help defeat his enemies, and will return to normal in three days, as long as he can resist the urge to drink human blood. This is where the film heads off into more familiar and fantastical territory.
